On today’s episode, Molly sits down with her close friend Michelle Garside. Michelle begins the conversation by disclosing her journey through her eating disorder. She begins with discussing her experience with pregnancy and postpartum eating disorders and the struggles that come with it.
Molly and Michelle dig into the thoughts that can creep in while struggling with eating disorders and relate to each other’s experiences. Family roots run deep, and Michelle acknowledges her family history related to eating disorders, body image, and how she has grown the most due to her mother’s mental illness.
Michelle started eating in secret at a very young age mimicking some of what she observed at home. She discusses the repercussions of this on her childhood, and how it then impacted her teenage years. After researching eating disorders on the internet in high school, she taught herself how to become anorexic which brought on many health problems for Michelle. This led to her being bulimic for 15 years.
After coming home from studying abroad in Australia, Michelle was diagnosed with several addictions in a hospital then headed to rehab. She went to OA and found it comforting for her and found “her people” there. In 2015, she began dating again and met her now husband, Eric, who would change her perspective of her addiction for the rest of her life.
Tune in to hear the details of how Michelle lived with her eating disorder, what the days to recovery looked like and how she continues to grow after being abstinent from bulimia.
